Native Commission applications due in July

Written By COURIER STAFF

Saturday, May 31, 2008

Those wishing to serve on the Vermont Commission of Native American Affairs have until July 1 to submit applications, according to a Vermont Division for Historic Preservation release.
The VCNAA is comprised of seven members appointed by the Governor for two-year terms. A list of candidates is compiled by the Division for Historic Preservation. Applicants from the Missisquoi Abenaki and other Vermont Abenaki and Native American regional tribal councils and communities will be considered along with other interested persons, according to the release.
Appointments are expected to be made in August. Current terms expire on July 31.
The Commission was established in the 2006 law that granted state recognition for Vermont’s Abenaki peoples.

Though the Commission is required by statute to meet just three times per year and any other times requested by the chair, the current VCNAA met monthly throughout most of its first two years, dealing with a variety of issues such as education, cultural outreach, burial and archeological issues, and taking public testimony for legislative proposals.
Those wishing to apply should complete an “Application for Gubernatorial Appointment” and submit it online by July 1 or with a postmark no later than July 1.
Applications are available on the “Boards and Commissions” section of the Governor’s homepage of his website http://governor.vermont.gov/boards/vermont-boards.shtml.
Directions for mailing the form to the Governor’s office are included on the form.
