Indian arts protection bill passes House By Rob Capriccioso
Story Published: Feb 19, 2010
WASHINGTON – The House in late-January passed H.R. 725 , the Indian Arts and Crafts Amendments Act of 2009, an amendment to previous law.
The 1990 law calls for products marketed as “Indian” to be produced by an Indian artisan or a tribe. Under the law, only the FBI could investigate violations. The amendment expands the law by allowing any federal law enforcement officer to investigate.
The Senate passed a similar bill, S.151, last summer. The bills must be reconciled before being presented to President Barack Obama to sign into law.
