Bones believed to be of an Indian woman from more than century ago
March 02, 2010 3:29 PM
By AARON DOME, staff writer

FORT IRWIN • Remains found at Fort Irwin Friday are believed to be that of an American Indian woman who died over 100 years ago.

Officials at the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office said that that the bones are believed to be very old and that they are no longer treating the case a homicide. The remains — believed to be that of an American Indian woman 18 to 20 years old — were discovered at Garlic Springs at the Fort Irwin Military Reservation by a game warden. The area where the remains were discovered overlooks a native American heritage site.

Because of the nature of the remains they were not subject to carbon dating. The estimated age and racial identity of the remains was determined by the forensic officer’s examination. Officials at the coroner’s office said that the remains would be handled by the Native American Heritage Commission, which could not be reached for comment.

The heritage commission provides protection from vandalism to the burial sites of American Indians and attempts to notify the most likely descendants of the discovery of the remains and associated grave items.
