Old artifacts at NH construction site just trash July 12, 2011 boston.com
PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—Some people thought they saw historical artifacts in the piles of dirt excavated during construction at Portsmouth's middle school.
Turns out it was just trash.
Pottery shards, old bottle necks and other items were seen by passers-by poking from the piles of dirt, but a state archeologist who has been monitoring the construction says the site was a landfill for more than 60 years and the items are just old garbage with little historical significance.
Edna Feighner from the state Division of Historic Resources tells The Portsmouth Herald that the agency has dug multiple test pits at the site to search for anything of archeological significance, but found nothing.
Feighner says her office plans to return to the site to explore an area that may contain Native American artifacts.
