NY voters back Vegas-style casinos, according to poll

With a movement to legalize casino gaming picking up steam, more than half of New York voters say they back Las Vegas-style casinos in the state.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released this morning, 56 percent said they’re in favor of casinos “similar to those in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.” The support is fairly consistent across regions, with a 56-37 split in New York City, 58-36 in the suburbs and 54-37 upstate.

“Roll the dice. Spin the wheel. Hit me. New Yorkers of every stripe say what stays in Vegas should stay in the Empire State as well,” Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll said in a statement.

The state currently has five full-fledged casinos run by American Indian tribes, including the Seneca Niagara Casino in downtown Niagara Falls and the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, Oneida County.

New York currently has a handful of full-fledged casinos in upstate New York, all run by American Indian tribes. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he will have a position on casino gaming in January, while Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos told the New York Post they would back a constitutional amendment allowing casinos, which would have to pass two consecutive Legislatures as well as a public referendum.

“Senator Skelos is supportive of a constitutional amendment that would allow the people to decide if we should expand casino gambling in New York,” Senate GOP spokesman Scott Reif said in a statement. “While it has the potential to create jobs and grow the economy, New Yorkers should ultimately make the final call.”

Sixty-four percent of New York voters said they believe casinos would be good for the economy, while 63 percent said they would lead to an increase in gambling addiction.

The Q poll surveyed 1,016 voters between Sept. 13 and 18, holding a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
