St. Regis Mohawks receive federal water infrastructure funds WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $600,000 to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe under the Indian Community Development Block Grant Program for Indian Tribes and Alaskan native villages. The ICDBG Program provides grants for use in developing viable communities by providing funds for economic opportunities, primarily for low and moderate income persons. The HUD grant is part of a funding package that includes $100,000 from Indian Health Service through the Environmental Protection Agency and $100,000 from the Akwesasne Housing Authority.
The ICDBG Program provides grantees with direct grants for use in developing viable Indian and Alaska Native Communities including a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities, primarily for low and moderate income persons. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe participated in this annual competitive grant process in order to get funding for the expansion of a municipal sewer system. Eligible applicants for assistance include any Indian tribe, band, group, nation or Alaska Native village which has established a relationship to the Federal government as defined in the program regulations. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is currently working on a five-phase waste water expansion plan. These funds will help the tribe fund these on-going developments. http://www.empirestatenews.net/News/20081222-7.html |
